Sushruta: Extempore Competition

About the organisation

Niti Manthan is an initiative to motivate and inspire young students on various socio-legal themes and to guide them traverses the righteous path throughout the endeavour of their personal and professional lives. By having a direct interaction and by the exchange of views with experienced legal minds and researching, conceptualizing and correspondingly reporting according to the selected avenue given below.

Niti Manthan currently functions in the areas of legal blogs, internships, e-classes, Young Leaders for Legal Literacy Program, Research centres, certificate courses and lecture series.

About the Research Centre

This Niti Manthan research centre is a unique effort to collaborate with the complexities of legal rulings and medical issues. The aim is for young upcoming professionals to have open conversations towards an effective policymaking in the healthcare sector -- to facilitate. In pursuance of this goal, the centre encapsulates operations including internships, tabling policy papers and empirical researches, and other awareness initiatives.

As the name suggests, the centre is rooted in the Indic tradition; touching upon the core values of Indian society amalgamated with a global outlook, and catalyzing holistic healthcare policy which could benefit the masses at the grassroots of India.

About Our Initiative

In an attempt to spread awareness about the broad theme of Medical & Health Law, Sushruta brings you its very first extempore competition to be held on a virtual platform.

What is an Extempore?

The competition is intended to reveal a competitor's ability to develop a point of view on a general topic and to deliver an impromptu speech within limited preparation time. Each participant will be given 5 minutes to prepare their point of view on the extempore topic randomly selected for them by the organizers under the broad themes to speak on for 1:30 – 2:00 Minutes followed by an optional Q&A by the Judge/Moderator.

RULES OF THE COMPETITION:

  1. Broad theme shall be disclosed pre-hand. Each participant will be provided with a specific topic, 5 minutes before their chance to speak.
  2. Language is not a barrier. You can comfortably put across your thoughts in English or Hindi.
  3. Each speaker will get a maximum of 1:30-2 Minutes to speak.
  4. Participants are not allowed to read off the internet or other literary sources. They can prepare their pointers in the given preparatory time but any means of plagiarism or cheating will result in disqualification.
  5. The judge can ask a few follow up questions to gain clarity of your stand on the given topic.
  6. No topics shall be repeated. Each speaker will get a new topic.
  7. 1st and 2nd Position holders will be awarded a cash prize (Amount to be specified on registration) and certificate.
  8. All participants will get participation certificates
  9. Limited Participants Slot of 25 Registrants on a first come first serve basis.

Judge For The Competition: Advocate Kashish Aneja

Supreme Court of India, [B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M. (Georgetown University Law Center, Washington D.C.)], is a practising advocate at New Delhi and is an International Legal Consultant. Mr Kashish has worked as a Judicial Law Clerk-cum-Research Assistant for Justice Dr A. K. Sikri (Retd.) at the Supreme Court of India.

Focusing on using law as a tool to empower evidence-based public health practices; Mr Kashish also works as an International Legal Consultant specialising in Global Health Law. In 2020, he has conferred the title ‘Scholar’ by the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, Washington D.C. His key areas of interest include health emergency preparedness and response, public-private partnerships, information privacy law and data protection, and legal and policy interventions to reduce key non-communicable disease risk factors, including tobacco, alcohol, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity. Mr Kashish has worked on projects with the World Health Organisation, the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law (Washington D.C.), the Centre for Reproductive Rights (Washington D.C.), GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance (Geneva), and Centre for International Trade and Economic Laws (Delhi).

Mr Aneja holds a Masters of Law in Global Health Law and International Institutions from Georgetown University and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. He was awarded the Georgetown University Global Health Law Scholar Award for his Master’s program. He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics (PGDMLE) from National Law School of India University, and a B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) from the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, India.

Judging Criteria:

The Judge will be looking for:

  • Clarity of thought
  • Logical structuring of the argument
  • General Knowledge of the topic
  • Enunciation
  • Overall presentation skills

In case of a tie, the winner will be decided after a discussion between a panel of judge and moderators.

Eligibility Criteria: Students pursuing Law (3 years or 5-year course), Medicine, Psychology, or any other related field
